The Salt Mine in Wieliczka is the oldest place
in Poland where a salt enterprise was developed.
Its roots reach medieval times. For the centuries
the salt mine was a source of richness of our country
and a material foundation of a culture – today
it is the most often visited of all Polish tourist sights.
Many centuries of exploitation of salt shaped the current landscape of mine excavations. Hidden below the town, located on nine levels, they reach the depth of 327 m (1 072,83 ft). The underground town is nearly 300 km (186,41 miles) of pavements and approximately 3000 chambers. The part which is available for sightseeing tours is only 3,5 km (2.17 miles) part which at the depth of 64 m (209,97 ft) to 135 m (442,91 ft).
